Our history

The Interdisciplinary Institute of Political Economy (IIEP) was established in 2011 as an executive unit of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET, by its acronym in Spanish). Its foundation was the result of the collaboration of researchers, groups and centres associated with the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the UBA – where it is located – and the CONICET, who decided to join forces to promote high-level interdisciplinary research in the field of social sciences, with a special focus on issues related to economics.

Since its foundation, the IIEP has established itself as a leading research institute in the field of economic research in the country and in Latin America. This is reflected not only in the quantity and quality of its academic output, but also in the active participation of the institute and its members in public debate through the media, social networks and other channels, and in its permanent involvement in various instances of dialogue and advice with different sectors of society. The IIEP is also part of various local and international research networks, and its members have established cooperation and exchange relationships with academic institutions both at home and abroad.
